1927 Witt-Will Dump Truck

VIN 702

Description

Witt-Will trucks were manufactured in Washington D.C. at 52 “N” Street N.E. “in the shadow of the White House”. The company was an outgrowth of the W.W. Griffith Company, which started as an automobile manufacturer in 1911. In March 1914, Griffith founded the Witt-Will (truck) Company and it produced trucks until folding in 1931. This 3 ½”-5 Ton coal dump was one of the last heavy trucks assembled. It was originally owned by the Griffith-Consumers Co,. coal and fuel oil distributors, who survive to this day. You may recognize the Washington Senators professional baseball team. The Witt-Will name is said to be derived from Mr. W.W. Griffith’s initials.

This unit is a combination of 3 ½ and 5 ton components and design, probably assembled from excess factory inventory during the dying days of the company. It operates well, if slowly top speed is 18 MPH at governed 1,300 RPM’s. The wood body also operates smartly.

Restoration took 2 years, and was performed by John Bodden of Seattle, WA. This model “SS” is felt to be the only known surviving Witt-Will.
